If opponent counter attacks fast - defend with spearmen/samurai ( adjust more villagers to 
wood). After FC going knights and raiding/securing relics still seems to be most effective playstyle, bugeishas can help against early spears. You should be able to grab nearby berries and hunt freely, then transition to farms. You can get first two daimyo upgrades from passively farming 
gold. In team games, you may go mass ona-mushas instead of knights.
